When I listened to this beautiful tape by PARAMAHANSA YOGANANDA, RECORDED IN 1949, three years before his death ~ which resulted in his body REMAINING 'NON-CORRUPT'! ~ I could not help thinking of the words to two songs: LET A SMILE BE YOUR UMBRELLA ~~~~~~~ and WHEN YOU'RE SMILING~WHEN YOU'RE SMILING~THE WHOLE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU...but when you're crying~you cry alone!!! If you ever see the movie, "SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET" (with Brad Pitt), you will notice the the young DALAI LAMA always seems to have a smile of joy on his face as he engages his fellow man. [THIS IS NOT A PHONEY SMILE ~ BUT GIVES THE VIEWER A FEELING OF GREAT WARMTH & CONCERN FOR HIM OR HER TO WHOM THE DALAI LAMA SPEAKS TO.]
AFTER LISTENING TO PARAMAHANSA TALK ~~ IT WAS THIS SMILE THAT I BELIEVE HE WAS TALKING ABOUT...Since I listened to the tape one day after seeing the smiling DALAI LAMA ~~this impression is very vivid in my mind!!!
YOGANANDA SAID (the same man who wrote the classic book, 'AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A YOGI')~ that when you smile, and can hold that smile, YOU ARE REFLECTING ALL THE GOOD YOU DO FOR GOD!!! If you can carry it all the time, despite the deception that you see around you ~ YOU ATTAIN A BLISS THAT IS 'UNMOVABLE'!!! [[As the Gnostics would say, you would become likened to a slave to love ~ an 'unshakable one ~ one of the "KINGLESS RACE"....]]
PARAMAHANSA SAYS THAT GOD HAS ALL THE POWER, BUT DOES NOT USE VENGEANCE UPON YOU....[As I have learned, we put ourselves in our own avenging position through our free will ~ LIFETIME AFTER LIFETIME!!!]
When we finally learn to stop being mean to ourselves by DOING THE GOOD, that goodness is reflected in the smile on our face ~ which comes from the HEART ~ AND BEHIND THE SMILE OF THE HEART IS THE SMILE OF THE SOUL ~ AND BEHIND THE SMILE OF THE SOUL IS THE SMILE OF THE SPIRIT!!!
[[What I got from this was that your SMILE sends a vibration that shines before men: we will eventually be smiling like THE BUDDHA ~~ VERITABLE LITTLE BUDDHAS!!!]]
PARAMAHANSA says that you lose your smile by identifying with the senses! Even in drudgery work, you can be happy if you smile....[I thought of the people of Africa who sing as they work, or the black people on the plantations of the south who did the same thing while working the hot fields.....It's like~YOU MAKE YOUR OWN HELL OR HEAVEN DEPENDING ON YOUR DISPOSITON ~~SO WHY NOT LET A SMILE "BE YOUR UMBRELLA"??? LOUIS ARMSTRONG always lit up the night with his smile as he beamed his beautiful music through his trumpet.]
If I understand this saint of the East ~ you can smile your way to heaven by LAUGHING AT THE "hospital of delusion" (this life) SO THAT YOU LEARN TO DO EVERYTHING FOR GOD; THEN EVEN DEATH ITSELF WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEND YOU BACK TO THE HOSPITAL ANYMORE!!! YOU, IN EFFECT, WILL HAVE THE LAST LAUGH!!!

When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.

I thought about that smile ~ then I realized its worth,
